The Linneys Guide to Marquise Cut Diamonds

If you’re looking for a diamond shape that captures your heart and draws the eye, look no further than the classic and historic marquise cut. While its whimsical shape resembles a smile, marquise cut gems are also called navette or boat-shaped, football-shaped or eye-shaped diamonds.

Marquise Cut Diamonds

MARQUISE CUT DIAMOND

Marquise diamonds display an elongated elliptical shape, with pointed ends, and typically possess 58 facets. Due to their lithe, long and narrow shape, marquise diamonds can create the illusion of greater size. This elegant cut is known to flatter the wearer by making the finger appear longer and slimmer.

Some Marquise shaped diamonds may demonstrate a bow-tie effect which occurs when light fails to fall into the middle of the diamond, due to the cut. This can appear as a bow-tie shaped shadow in the centre of the stone. While many agree this adds to the mysticism and romance of the cut, a severe effect is undesirable. Our diamonds are carefully inspected to make sure no strongly visible bow-tie effect exist in our gems.

Marquise diamonds usually possess 1.85 – 2.00 ratio, making its length approximately twice the size of its width – the ideal balance. However, for many, choosing your marquise diamond depends on personal preference – let your heart and eyes guide you to the stone of your choice. If you desire a more rounded, wider Marquise shape, choose a lower ratio. If a narrower, more elongated shape, is what is calling you, choose a higher ratio.

History

MARQUISE CUT ENGAGEMENT RINGS

“Marquise” refers to a rank in the royal family between count and duke. The rank is given by birthright, not by marriage or appointing. The original version of this diamond cut was created in the 18th century by a jeweller hired by King Louis XV, who challenged the jeweller to create a diamond to reflect the shape of the mouth of his much-loved mistress, Marquise de Pompadour.
